  • Wild flower seeds

Anyone had luck sowing seeds on rough ground. Got a couple of areas that need a bit of work so windered about throwing some wildflower seeds down.

Much harder to get a good showing than might be thought. A couple of usual problems are that most ground near houses is too rich, so you just end up with rough grass and also you really need a bit of a clear area to giver the seeds a chance to start.

It is possible to start stuff sowed in trays and then dump them a wodge at a time in to holes but it is a bit hit and miss.

On the whole I'd say its less trouble to get a few cuttings of some sort of stuff like hawthorn growing, and bung them in, as long as you can wait a few years for them to flower.

Of course some things like comfrey or horseradish will out-compete the grass, but they're not everyone's cup of tea.

Amelanchier are good small trees - pretty flowers which the bees like, fruit for the birds and lovely Autumn foliage

You're very welcome - I've got one in front of my cottage which I bought from Wilkinsons for about a £1 ages ago - I've wanted to try the fruit from it, but the birds always get to it first.

I have a couple of areas like this and have bought a box of wild flower seed from thompson and morgan and have put a box down for the last couple of years and have had limited success

first year i put seed straight down the second I rotovated first which helped
This year I am trying growing a turf size mat and laying that down
