I'm planning ahead. Ok way into the distant future
I'll tell you what I want then you clever lot can tell me what I need.
I want a cottage garden look. Nothing to needy like dahlia that need tubers digging up and storing every winter. Never going to happen .
Was thinking mostly perennials but nothing to thuggish like Michaelmas daisy.
Nothing to tall, it gets a bit breezy.
Just to complicate things, my cottage garden my have to be grown in big tubs ( I don't know yet to be honest)

But growing from seed, not buying in plants.

Lilies do fabulously in my garden. Though I haven't got any at the moment.

Are you looking at just flowers or are you wanting some shrubs?

That's why I asked. What would you add for winter, colour, structure ? There will be a few hedges and trees around the perimeter.
Voles use my lupins as bedding material. I have to plant lots or wait till they are quite big before planting.
I've got 4 in the garden that have survived a couple of years but I've planted about 30.

Maybe shrubs for structure, especially during winter, underplanted with spring bulbs and taller perennials that will start to grow as the daffs etc die back.

Include your evergreen herbs like rosemary, sage, lavender and bay.

Might use a few flowers for cutting. Mostly just to look pretty in the garden.
I like the mixing in of herds. I can do that. Lavender doesn't grow well up here. Well not for me anyway.

Peonies? Perennial, no hassle, will grow in big tubs. I like the foliage, though I've yet to have any flowers. I just bought cheap tubers in an offer and bunged them in.

I always grow pink and purple Poppies. My Nan saved the seeds from her garden( 2010). I've saved seeds from them since but I'm still using her's. So I try not to grow any others because I don't want them to cross. I'm just silly and sentimental .
I grow rudbeckia as well, really like it. It's never survived a winter though . I have to sow more every year.

I'm planning on taking lot of cutting of things this year, buddleia, honeysuckle, calmatis, hydrangea, hawthorn, probably some others that I don't know the name of. Will also be rehoming some of the snow drops, crocus, daffodils and grape hyacinth.

Some rudbeckia will survive the winter - there are perennial varieties, some are annuals/ biannuals.
Goldsturm returns every year in my garden. It is a perennial. I have some little toddlers growing..

I grow these, just because they're the one I happen to have.
Rudbeckia - gloriosa daisies & rustic dwarf mix
Must be honest I don't know if they are annual or perennial. Should probably pay a little more attention to the packets

If you are including budleia then also consider lilac, tree mallow (like barnsley) and winter honeysuckle.

Biennials/ short lived perennials such as honesty, foxglove, canterbury bells, teasels, sweet rocket.

Then to add to your bulbs - alliums. Lots and lots of alliums.

I would go Peruvian lilies/ astromeria instead of oriental lilies as the flowers are smaller (not so centre of attention), don't suffer lily beetle and more productive IMO. Don't know how they fare in a pot though.

Edit: Scarlets rose campion grows well from seed I have half a bed filled with them looking forward to them flowering this year.
