She does like camellia too but she grew that successfully so there's none of this hilarious mourning that goes on whenever she spots a resplendent magnolia. So, mother's Day gift. But if this dies too ...

I'm wondering if I shouldn't just book a spa day instead. Play it safe.

No wall available to plant it against ? that would help make the odds a lot better ...

PS Glad Babru came along, I was definitely getting out of my depth :-)

Can't beat a spa day....though a nice plant is a gift that lasts and lasts
Mostly flowers, some fruit and veg, at the seaside in Edinburgh.

We've never been to one! Somehow, we just never got round to it, not even on holiday. The closest we got was a face massage in London, which was surprisingly relaxing.

But somewhere in the countryside here would be lovely, do it properly.

But you are right, a magnolia would be something she could appreciate again and again and tick off one regret off her list. Fingers crossed I find a good sized and affordable one!

You're plenty helpful! And I do have a few walls available, one especially is South facing and right by the sun porch/green house which means she'll get a good view inside or out.

The wall sounds like just the ticket - happy gardening

NB No point knowing something about stuff, and keeping it all to yourself - its taken me the best part of 50 years to turn in to the blithering idiot I am today :-)

Unless it dies in its first winter, obviously.

Impulse buy - Aldi had a soulangeana this morning and I just succumbed!

While searching online last night, I came across a magnolia 'red lucky' that flowers from March to August, and I decided to take my time looking for that. Maybe make a trip down all the way to Cornwall where they sell it, Burncoose Nurseries. Never been to Cornwall! Adventure!

Also, came across a camellia sinensis and tea! - it's the tea plant and well, there's another one on the to-get list.

Just wondering how many mothers you might have - but perhaps I'd better not ask :-)

The first 2 magnolias we tried got killed by snails but were probably not much more than twigs when bought. The one that has grown got hammered by snails the first spring but it survived when they were controlled.

I'm following nickdub's advice and leaving it in the pot, letting me shift it around - kept it on a table on the terrace today, then shifted it inside once the sun started to fade. Hopefully, this will keep it safe from pests, frost and other hazards.

I'm sure something will trip me up but fingers crossed.
