  • What is this?

Can anyone tell me what this is? Had it in the greenhouse for a while but for the life of me can’t remember buying it.

Is it a Nepeta or Catmint?

What do the leaves smell like? I thought..... one of the mint varieties? lemon balm? and then catnip

A bit of a snap there VC

I think it's cat mint, although I'm not sure... mine never got that big last year. My cats ate it and got high too often lol

Certainly looks like catmint. Rub the leaves and see.

Looks like catmint to me too. No need for it to be in the greenhouse, mine has grown fine in a pot outside over the past two winters, till I can get it in the ground.

Can’t think why I would have bought catnip. Last thing I want to do is attract cats to my garden. Although sure the dog would be keen! Will go and run the leaves and see how hey smell.

Pretty blue flowers over quite a few weeks in early summer. Nice in a vase, especially with other cottage-type flowers. Bees love it too.

If you cut it back after flowering, you will get more, smaller flowers later on.

As a rule, Catmint (nepeta racemosa or nepata fassini) doesn't really attract cats. Nepeta Cataria does, and my cats (and the neighbours') love it!

Had a smell of the leaves. Not terribly minty but did have a fairly strong smell. Have put outside as I could do with the space. Once I’ve done the front garden will plant it and see how it does. If it does attract cats I’ll be getting rid as I’m working hard to get more birds into my garden.

It doesn't smell of mint (despite its name). It does have a strong smell, however, when rubbing the leaves - a bit spicy and camphory.
