    I would love to try an acer, could anyone help with how i should be doing and when the best time is.

    Soor, but the ornamental type of Acer, which I presume is what you mean, do not grow from cuttings. They are either seed grown or grafted on to a different rootstock. Sorry. They are easy to get the seeds to germinate, but not easy to keep over their first winter as small plants.
