Help with plant identification please

A friend has asked for my help in identifying this low growing plant in chalk uncultivated downland. I am completely stumped. Do any of you far more knowledgeable folk know?

I was wondering to myself why I didn't recognise this flower, as it clearly has a UK wide distribution. Looking up my old-tech Readers Digest wildflower book, I see it is only 2-4 inches high, so pretty but tiny. I do recognise it, but never knew the name, so thanks for this.
