Verbena propagation

Afternoon all.

I knocked a new shoot off my verbena bonariensis. I stuck it in water hoping it would root. It has doubled in length but shows no sign of rooting.



It is possible to get a new plant from this or am I wasting my time?

propagation from cuttings is always a race between the plant forming new roots or dying first - the fact that yours is still alive makes it likely that it will eventually start growing roots, but of course there are no guarantees.

Thanks. It's not exactly a cutting as it was a new shoot I accidentally knocked off. So, just leave in the water and hope, or would it be better poked into a gritty compost mix like I might for rosemary or similar?

Don't know about the cutting but mine self seeds everywhere. So much that I don't worry about knocking bits off it - as I often do.
Maybe cut the top off, back to a pair of leaves and shove it in the ground wherever you want it to grow.

I was going to give it to a pal if it rooted, that was all.

a pot of gritty compost and a plastic bag over the lot is the normal answer - not grown this from cuttings so none too sure if any special treatment is called for.

I grow it from cuttings. And I would do as ND has suggested. Gritty compost and plastic bag...I sit mine on a heat mat to keep the temp even too. But it should be ok without in this weather.
