  • Covering Tulip Bulbs in Containers

    Good afternoon, all.

I've just planted my tulip bulbs in the pot where they will hopefully flower in Spring. As it's not heavily raining, I've covered the pot for now with an old compost bag turned inside out.

As it's got tiny holes in it, would it be better to sub this old bag with a bin bag without holes when monsoon weather comes? Or will the tiny holes not let in that much water?

I've never done this before so thought I'd ask advice. Thanks in advance.

Presumably the pots have drainage holes at the base? If so, stand the pots up on bricks, tiles, whathaveyou, leaving the drain holes clear and let the rains come. Its very heavy down here - not sure which way it heading.

They don't mind the rain as long as they have drainage holes, But I must remember to cover my pots with wire netting to stop the blimming squirrels thieving the bulbs! I only has 2 out of 24 actually grow last spring

        Mine are growing in containers.
I just leave them where they are even when it rains.
So long as they are able to drain they should be fine.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Agree with bramble. No need to cover the pot regardless of rain, shine, snow, bulbs are hardy. They won't take to standing in water so drainage is essential. Otherwise, let them grow, and enjoy the colour come spring.
