  • Freesias.

    Looking for advice.
    Has anyone grown freesias.
I bought two bags of bulbs a while ago.
When is the best time to plant them.
Out in the open ground or in containers.
Do they need any special care.
    Thanks in advance.

I will be interested in replies as I never seem to be able to grow them and really love their scent.

I have some in a pot that I started last year in the greenhouse but all there is is a few strap leaves.

They're one of my fave flowers. I did try some bulbs (corms?) ages ago but I think because they're not native here they want to flower at the 'wrong time'. Plus I think they're not cold hardy? But I can't remember as it was a while back. I think I eventually got one lot of flowers.

Well, I will plant them in containers in the greenhouse and see how they do.
        Thanks.

My freesias are now coming into bloom. I don't think the temperature here is much higher than Europe at the moment. You could plant the bulbs in flowerpots indoors, they should bloom. The bulb produces offset bulbs that can be replanted. Also, if you leave the flower to grow naturally, a seed is formed that can be planted. I haven't bought freesia bulbs for years, I'm still replanting as I take up all the bulbs when the flowers have died down and store them in net bags from potatoes.

            Update on my Freesias.
            All the bulbs came up.
8 have buds on and four are in full flower.
            A red, a yellow, a purple and a pink.
I kept them in the greenhouse in three containers and just kept them just on the dry side.
Delighted with the success and they dmrlk Devine.
I will try to post a pic.
