I think it's more to do with the temperatures DIana. Most bulbs are planted 2-3 time the size of the bulb deep so about 1.5-2" in the case of Crocus - so they will be through I guess. The cold weather will slow them up.

thanks Nick I have covered them a little bit more but my garden does face south and we are getting a lot of warm weather here in Orkney at the moment but I guess that will soon change.
They're hardy little things, so they should be OK. I was clearing up the borders yesterday and managed to slice the top off one of the tulips which had started growing and was just under the surface.
