  • petunia seeds

Out of a packet of (microscopic) petunias - sky magic - I only managed to get 4 to germinate. I gave them a constant day and night temperature - what did I do wrong? Think I'll buy the plants at the market next time!

Dunno - but we planted some f1 & f2 petunia seeds - germinated okay in a heated prop, but seem to not want to grow any bigger

Think maybe we needed to pot them on/prick them out sooner after germinating?

Think I'll look for some ready-mades too, but will persevere with the seeds next year.

Petunia's can be pigs sometimes. I bought a packet of F1 hybrids 5 seeds for £3! 1 germinated & it sat there for ages. Last week it duddenly decided to double in size!

I would think about getting plugs next year as they are a lot easier to work with!

If you want Surfina's or Million Bells, buy your plants early & grow them on in a heated greenhouse or a sunny windowsill & then take cutings & build up stock that way. A lot of the are covered by plant breeders rights, but you are allowed to propagate for your self, you just can't sell them or give them away.

I find petunias germinate erratically plus the seed is so fine when sowing it. If you do get them to germinate they take an age before they decide to grow to any great size. I think i will go with Nicks idea, buy early and propogate from cuttings.
