  • Can you move lavender?

I've got about 6 lavender plants in a big pot, which I now want to use for something else. is it worth moving the lavenders (they must be about 3 years old) and will they transplant, or is it the compost bin for them? thanks.

I successfully moved my five year old lavender plants that were in the ground last October and they have all got away ok. I would imagine that as yours are in pots as long as you soak the bottom of the hole you are going to plant into they will be fine - of course, you have nothing to lose, if it doesn't work then put them into the compost! Dont forget to trim them lightly after they have flowered!

great, thanks for that - I was wondering if it was worth bothering, but as you say, nothing to lose!

Lavenders don't really like being moved but if the plants are not too big they should be O.K. You could always try it & also take some cuttings off them to try & root if you like the plants & don't want to lose them.

I had 5 plants in one large pot and I took them out of the pot, soaked the root ball for ages and then was able to loosen the roots a little and divide the plants. I then planted them around the garden, but a little deeper than they were in the pots as they were slightly woody. They all surviced fine, but for some reason got munched by snails or slugs or something and I had to cover them with bottle cloches and they've put on a spurt of growth now and are doing well.

So bite the bullet and go for it...I think they'll be fine!

Take some cuttings as well as moving them F&VV, that way if they don't survive you will have some cuttings to replace them. Lavander cuttings take quite easily from soft wood. Go for it.

You will find yourself a partner,
