Lavender from seed

We collected some seed from our lavender last autumn and would like to try growing some from seed. does anyone know when to sow, what conditions and if this will even work?

i can't help because i've never done it from seed. the cuttings root, like rosemary, so easily that i always do them instead.

we collected all this seed from various plants last year, but we do not have any planting instructions

I sowed seeds last year - the plants are outdoors now, still in the cells I sowed them in coz they grew really slowly (and they are a dwarf variety too). I think I sowed them around May. If I come across the seed packet I will post more info.

I found a few self sown plants around my lavender, so I picked a few old seed heads several weeks ago and sowed the seeds in the heated propagator. They have come up now, so I'll be moving them to cooler conditions tomorrow. I've read somewhere to plant the seeds in the soil they are to grow in, they don't transplant well if they go into compost apparently. I've some plants from self sown seeds that flowered in their second year.

We put some in a square pot last summer, in the soil that they will stay in. They grew quite fast up until Oct then stopped. About 3 inches tall still. I am hoping for a spurt of growth in the next few weeks - but at least I know they do grow from seed!

Thank you for all the advice. will try planting some in small pots and put them in the kitchen as we do not have an electric propogator

I grew 'Little Lady' from seed I collected. It must have already been a year or two (or even three) old before I planted it.

From memory, I sowed the seeds into a 3" pot in spring and kept them in the polytunnel, every single seed germinated and I now have to find homes for the 12 little plants....

I would wait a little while, then sow them into a pot on a windowsill. They should do fine.

I've grown from bought seed very successfully, but agree that cuttings root really easily. I've not had any success yet with home saved seed or self seeding. Not sure why. I'll consult the "bible" (The Genus Lavandula) to see if that will shed any light.
