  • Any planting advice for north/shady area?

    Hi there

    Advice please.

Under my windowsill at the front of the house I have a little area that is North facing, shady with clay soil. I would like to plant a few medium sized bushes, for structure in winter and some plants for colour. Does anyone have any suggestion on what would suit these conditions?

    Kind regards

North facing, Butchers broom, ferns, hostas, hellebores, camellia and for a quick splash of colour in summer, impatiens (bussy lizzie)

Not sure how big you want to go, but how about Fatsia japonica? It has the most wonderful leaves, all-year round structure for the garden and it's tough as old boots. There's also a variegated version of it.

How about a Hebe? When we lived in a clay soil area they loves the soil and did well. It was on the North side of the house too
