Well done whigger, great idea. Can't believe I never thought of growing sunflowers from "edible" seeds. I know the seeds I bought recently for my bird feeder say "no grow formula" on the bag, but I'm not sure it includes sunflower anyway.

You could have your own sunflower version of the Chileman challenge.

Well the sunflowers from the bird seed are definitely NOT no-grow as they're already about an inch tall..........does that mean i'm winning already?

We've got a big bag of sunflower hearts - d'ya reckon they'll grow without their little shells? I can rescue some from the rat food otherwise....

Think we've got to establish some rules here. Do we all agree that the seeds must come from a packet of birdseed?

just been reading this thread, sounds like good fun to try it out! i'm in agreement with whigger re. seed should be from a packet of birdseed - is it a wee contest then?

                  Hi Folks

Been reading on /off for about a month and have recently moved house with a large garden and have decided to take the plunge and try a bit of gardening ( i would love to try an allotment but there's not one here), very green so expect loads of questions .

My daughter loves sunflowers so we're in agreement and we're going to try one or two this year if you'll have us.( i prefer the idea of vegs but if it gets my little 'un interested in the outdoors then sunflowers it is )

A contest it is then.......starting from here lets see who can grow the biggest sunflower from seeds taken out of birdseed.

I will ask Shirley to rummage around the remaining gerbil food we haven't yet eaten and ask her to pot up some seeds. Will that qualify? Or specifically bird nosh only? We have some of that hanging on the shed as well I think.
                        Let's go diggin' dirt....

Big silver bird, come land low and slow
Cut your engines, cool your wings,
                        You've taken me home...

I think we should include rodent foods as well since it is probably much the same.
