Ideas please for a plant to grow under a pot

I adopted a large broken terracotta pot last summer from my sister in law that she was going to throw out. It has about a third of one side missing and my idea was to lay it on its broken side so it looks like a whole pot thats fallen over and got partialy burried. I would like to plant something in its shelter as it were and the site I have in mind is south facing so it will get very hot so I was thinking of some sort of alpine. What would you plant?

I have seen those succulents which are grown on roofs succeed well in pots you describe.
Goodness knows what they are called- if you rip off a leaf, they will grow from that.
Medicinal I think.
Looks like a green fleshy flower.
Looks very similar to these...
