Planting Canna Rhizomes

I have obtained a rhizome for a pound from my local cheap-jack shop and was wondering how quickly they grow? The thing is that I am staying in my flat till the second week of June, which is the soonest that I can get home to the garden. I anticipate starting the plant on my windowledge. When is a good time to plant the rhizome so that when I arrive home I can just stick it out?

Any advice is also very welcome.

My cannas are sheltering in their pots in the greenhouse at the moment - they won't take a whiff of frost. If you pot up the rhizome now, you should be right on time for getting it out in your garden (well, let's hope the frosts will have finished by then )
