Or at least I THINK they're oriental? I originally planted one huge red poppy a few years ago, not the small ones that self seed themselves everywhere, this one has kept itself to itself! Now though it has eventually grown into a lovely little clump, but I (ever changing my mind!) want to move it to a different spot in the border - firstly, do you think it's feasible to move a poppy at this time of year and secondly do you think I could divide it as I would for shrubby perennials?

You can grow it from bits of the root Sue - unkindly called Irishman's Cuttings! (I'm allowed to say that - me grandad was Irish!) Lift the clump and pull off bits with some root if you can do this. Otherwise, cut lengths of the thick root and insert them in compost in a pot. (Make sure you get them right way up so the plant is in with a chance!) They usually recommend making a sloping cut at the bottom and a straight cut at the top so that if you're taking several you don't mix up their 'way-up-ness'. Good luck. They are a sumptuous and gorgeous plant aren't they?Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Thanks for that; we love our poppies - oriental or otherwise, and interplant them all over the place. I never dig a self sown poppy no matter which of my veg beds it is in, unless it is huge and then it goes into my OH's beds.
We'll try that method later in the year.
