  • Cannas wont sprout

OK so during that Parker bulb giveaway I decided to buy some cannas. I put them in pots to get them started in a nice warm spot in the greenhouse slightly damp compost....no show. Must be six weeks at least, I tipped one out today to check progress...none at all, doesn't seem rotten....looks like the day I planted it....must admit I wasn't quite sure about which way up they should be Am I doing something wrong? shouldn't there be a glimmer of a shoot or root by now? patience not my strong suit!!!

You say slightly damp compost - maybe you need it a little damper?

Very odd. Mine took about five days.
They should be no more than an inch deep in wet compost.
The problem may be that they need a lot of warmth, so start them indoors!

There should also be buds present on the tuber.
      I hope they do well.

They should have been well through by now. Try feeding it with a very weak mixture and put it outside in a sheltered spot see if that helps.

Oh dear conflicting advice!!!! I'll try watering them again, I was a bit worried about rotting them maybe that is it. Certainly warm in that greenhouse now if nothing happens this week I'll put them outside (hoping this weather holds).

Mine have only just started showing above ground this year (2" long shoots now) - they have outside all year and also were moved 2 months ago which probably didn't help. There's time yet.

              Hi Paulotti

Mine have only just started shooting, all three about an inch high. All I did with mine (last years corms) was pot up with fresh compost and water when compost had nearly dried out. Mine had the benefit of being on the bottom shelf in the green house so they got the slops from the top shelf
They are ok. If your worried move them into the light and warmth of a top shelf and keep the corms moist. Worked for me.

Yes I believe they are a type of lily. Great OTT things with paddle leaves and large gladioli type flower spikes...often seen in French municipal planting schemes.

Watered mine some more and moved them to the bottom shelf and have fingers x-d
