Yukka Plants

Hi everyone,
I've got this yukka plant over 6 foot high with leaves at the top a 3 foot empty trunk then a good bush at the bottom. I'm wanting to cut it back and then take cuttings from the trunk, can anyone advise the best way to do this?

mine got some long rooty things, on it a couple of years ago, so i cut the branches off and planted and they grew, i also tried just cutting of the branches right next to the stem, and a couple of them took, though didn't do as well as the already rooted ones, I think they got roots cos the pot was too small).

i now have 2 in my garden, where they seem to be doing ok, as long as they get covered over when its frosty or theres snow.

If I'm not mistaken (but I could be!) you can air-layer things like this to give the bit you cut off a better chance. You make a cut on the stem at the point you will eventually sever it, and tie on moss or damp compost in a poly bag so the the cut bit has moist compost around it. Fasten it on and it will throw roots into the moss/compost. When this happens, cut it off completely and you have a rooted stem to plant, guaranteed to succeed. I've got a dracaena touching the ceiling that I'm overdue to do this with. Must get off me butt and off the computer and do something!
