Cuttings from a HUGE fuschia bush!

Hiya,

Could anyone tell what's the best way to take larger cuttings from a fuschia bush. The thing is massive, about 4.5 ft high, 4ft wide & 3ft deep. I've never seen a fuschia bush that big!

I'd like to split it up a little but I'd hate to kill it as I think it's quite old (it was here when we bought our house last year). It's currently flowering & has quite a bit of new growth this year.

Also, when would be the best time to do it?

There's a nice guide here. It also tells you the best time of year.
You won't be able to 'split' a fuchsia bush, as they grow from one or more stems rather than as a clump.
They're relatively easy to get to take from cuttings - even I have managed it, as long as the compost is well drained.

I have a tree type fushia that was here when we moved in,it must be 10 to 12 feet high,I'll try to get a picture when the suns out,bit dull and grey now.

Had to crop this rather a lot to get it to fit,don't know what type it is though.

Sorry Burnie, I call that Horrible Hedge Fuchsia! I just don't like it, I prefer little compact bush fuchsias with larger flowers.

Cuttings are dead easy from most fuchsias. Do it now, just cut off a 4 inch piece below a leaf joint, remove all but the top leaves, and put in water until rooted. Then pot into compost. Remove all flowers until the plant is established and growing strongly.
