  • Agapanthus from seed

Hi, I have successfully divided agapanthus, but I am now looking to produce plants from seed and I need help.

Are only established plants likley to produce seed?

how do you know when the seed pods are ripe?
Which month is best for planting?

    Thanks

there's an agapanthus in a garden near mine (well established) which sets seed every year. Mine are a bit iffy about it. They are black when ripe, and drop out by themselves. When they get to this stage collect them and keep them cool and dry until next spring. I'd sow around March.
Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

      Easy to grow from seed

      Hi

Yep, they are easy to grow from seed. Very obliging with seed production. I have grown them from seed on a number of occasions. Its not the quickest way to propagate as it takes a few years before they actually flower. Very satisfying though.
I have 12 young plants on the go at the moment that I sowed this Easter gone.
Agapanthus seem to be tough as old boots. They do seem to like a good moisture retentive soil though with plenty of sun to encourage them to flower.
