  • Do roses and clematises get on well?

I found myself in the situation where the number of plants in my garden has greatly exceeded the amount of space available

There was meant to be an arch for clematises but it's not going to happen for the garden is overcrowded as it is.

Is it ok if I plant them next to my climbing roses against that Sheltered South Facing Wall(TM)? I have individual trellis for each rose on the wall, what if I throw in a clematis or two for good measure? Are there any potential pitfalls in such a ménage?

    Thanks

I am not an expert on this but I've had a rose and clematis growing side by for a couple of years and they seem to be ok together. I would not pick one like a 'Montana' variety as the growth it produces might be too much for the rose. If I am wrong on this then maybe I've been lucky that they have survived. On the other side of the arch I have a Wisteria and at the back a Japanese honeysuckle. My garden borders are so small and I love plants so much that I have to pack plants in close together; it is usually a case of survival of the fitest.

Yes they do get on (apart from montanas and orientalis)!

Give the rose a couple of years head start and then grow your clematis into it. Choose a clematis that you prune by cutting back to a pair of buds close to the ground in winter/early spring. Then cut it, and holding all the bits above the cut, pull upwards and away from the rose, and the whole top of the clematis will come away without damaging the rose.

      Enjoy

        Thanks guys...

The roses have been planted this spring, they are on their third year apparently. They look healthy but only just reach the bottom of the trellis.
Clematises I bought from Lidl and they have been growing around one of the shrubs for the past two summers, this year I had one flower on each. Going to check the tags on them tomorrow.

I think I'll give it a try otherwise they're going to die anyway.

          Yes, they're classic partners.
Clematis likes its face in the sun, and its feet in the shade. My Lidl clematis is flowering its socks off all over my shed
