  • Drying marigold seeds?

    Hi
Could someone tell me what to do with marigold seeds? Do I need to dry them for use next year? If so how do I go about it?
    Thanks in advance

Yes, they pretty much fall out of the head and there are a few options.

I just let the head fall off, but if I want to save the seeds, and this goes for lots of them; put the heads into a paper bag and just leave them to dry out. By the time spring comes, they have dried out and are ready for sowing. I leave those silica gel packets that you get in handbags etc in the box with all the paper bags in, all the bags have different seed sets drying out.

You can do it properly, see the link below - I mean the bit about the rice and the cut off foot of a pair of tights...

I just pick off the dried flower heads, take them home and separate out the seeds over a glass of wine*. That last bit is optional.

*edit: of course, I meant with a glass of wine.

Careful not to get the dust in your wine though!

Sounds like a very civilised bit of gardening to me

Personally I would separate the seeds from the rest of the flower head over an empty plastic bowl - I don't like bits of anything (or fruit flies) in my wine.
