You know, we have never grown Sunflowers so tall, maybe it's the soil, however, some years we do get a profusion of sunflowers, virtually free, as we feed the birds, and they just chuck the seeds out of the feeder until they find something that takes their fancy.
Mine (grown from birdseed) only reached about 4ft. They look rather sorry for themselves now. However, not as sad looking as the fields and fields of blackened sunflowers we saw in Italy recently. I'm guessing they were also grown for their seeds.
coreopsis pm me with your address as I still have some though while I was away some of the sunflowers went mouldy gutted cos they were in doors in the dry. got lots off my biggest one though.
Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
and ends with backache
when do the seeds appear?? i've left the flowers, all the petals have fallen off, but no sign of any seeds yet just a brown crispy patch in the middle.
nope, we don't get birds in our front garden for some reason, i've been watching for them developing, the petals have only just dropped, and there are still some buds, the red ones have multiple heads.
