  • Bulb spacing

I have just won a crate of daff bulbs. As my husband has a bit of a track record of strimming anything green that dares to grow in the spring, I thought I would put them in pots. The bulbs are large (calibre 14), I have terracotta pots dia 25cm, how many can I squeeze into each pot?? I like the thick clump look with spring bulbs but am unsure how much space they need to grow.

I would go for it and put in up to ten, in two layers of five. I have made the mistake before of spacing bulbs 4inches apart (as it says in the books) but ended up with a very sparce display, one daff here, one right over there (points into the distance). Now I crowd them in, in layers and get a nice clump of colour. Also if you have a crate of them you're going to have lots.

I second Martha on that Tootles. For daffs in pots I cram in as many as possible in 2 layers and get a good showy display. Lucky you to win so many.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

cripes, i didn't know about the layering thingy, oh well, i did stuff a fair few of each in each pot, some of which are already showing leafiness , never mind I shall know for next year.
