Mahonia-what chance of survival?

Sadly we had to have our dog put to sleep last week and have buried her in the garden. We decided to buy a plant, and place it above where she lays, but I am concerned whether it will survive. It's a Mahonia 'Winter Sun' and it will be planted in a shaded spot. I know it's a bit late now we've bought it, but as the soil is a bit wet at the moment should I risk planting it now, or leave it and see if we have a few dry days and plant it then?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry for your loss, and a plant is a great idea.

if you are worried about the soil being wet, why not pot it into a large pot for now and then plant it out come early spring after the frosts?

I've been chatting to my cat today (who is under an apple tree) as I was working in the potager.

I don't know what to say about the plant- but found this which says humus rich, moist, well drained soil

Can you add anything to the topsoil? Bride's is a good idea though!

I'd leave it in its pot for a while. Enrich the soil when it's dridd our somewhat. Maybe even dig in some gravel to help it to drain. Mahonia Winter Sun is a lovely plant.

Sorry to hear about your dog.
The plant should be fine to go in now. I think it's a good time of the year to plant. Mahonias are fine in the shade and it's better the soil is wet than too dry. Check it every few weeks as frost can 'lift' the plants from the soil sometimes - if that happens just reposition.

you have my sympathy gemlady, I lost my trusty companion a few years ago it was horrible but we "adopted" an new pup and she's 2 this year and I always said I wouldn't have another dog as we wouldn't get one like Meg, and I have to say Natch is anything like her but she's still a terrific dog - she's asleep on the settee with Mrs G at the moment but is a real greenhouse hound

Mahonia is a terrific Idea as they flower early and have scented flowers that are liked by wildlife. Once the ground dries a tad I'd plant it whilst the soil is still warmish and it will get a chance to establish.
