Chrysanthemum cuttings?

I bought nine different coloured, named, species of spray chrysanths earlier in the year purely to use for cuttings for next years plants.

Each weren't individually labelled so I've had to wait til now to differentiate colours and species. All but two have flowered and the other two are budded up, even though they are early sprays!

They must have been propagated from cuttings taken fairly late and should have flowered earlier in the year. For ease I potted them individually into florists buckets, left them out til the first frost and now have them flowering in the greenhouse. A few have cuttings starting to come from the stools now.
I have grown chrysanths before and used to dig em up and box em for the winter to allow me to take cuttings from new growth in the spring.........this worked quite well. Then I was advised to wash off all soil before boxing up..........this didn't work so well.

Because they are still growing and seem quite happy it is my intention to leave them growing in the pots and just take cutting as they show.

Although this is not the done thing, has anyone else had success with this method?

Snadgar, i have chrysanths in pots and leave them outdoors every winter with no ill effects. they are about 4 years old now and still going well. Hope this helps.

Thanks bramble..............just wondered are yours the 'cushion' varieties tho, as opposed to spray varieties?

I've got some spray ones outside now. Bought them this year as small cuttings. Wondered what to do with them. I shall now try potting and bringing into the greenhouse I think. They have been great for cut flowers - wonderful colours. I'm a convert!

Use them for cuttings and you'll have enough to set up a flower shop next year!

Right yer cuttings/stools ( chrysanthemum stools that is not No2's)

Yes they will be OK in the pots over winter. Cut the main stem down to about 8"(a handy stick to tie the label to so you can see it). then trim back any growth from the bottom with secateurs to a pair of leaves, keep them cool and fairly dry.

Come the springy bit around jan/Feb time give them a jolly good watering to get them all excited

once you see new green growth give them a weak hi nitrogen feed ( I use Chempak No2 @1/4 strength) this will help push the material along. then you can take your cuttings in the normal way.

Alternatively you can start them a bit earlier and the cuttings that root you pot them on ( if there is enough put 6 of one variety to a half seed tray) when they have 4 pairs of leaves nip the tops out (or let them get bigger and take the top as a seperate cutting if you're a bit short) and repeat this with the side breaks then decide when you want your cuttings and make the last stop 1 month before and then take the final cuttings of these mother plants.

This is how I grow my late sprays as I don't root them till july for flowering around now.

You can also use the same technique for growing the disbud type that you can flower at Christmas ( Fred Shoesmith and sports, Cassandra and sports etc) these are normally stopped July 25th for Chrismas flowering but grow to about 7ft+ so I usually do a final stop in June take the cuttings around the 25th july and grow them straight up with 1 flower on and they make about 4ft high - much more manageable!! and you only need 6" pots rather than 9" so you can get more plants in the given area.
