  • Oak tree seedling

My husband likes to put things in pots and hope they grow. Latest is an acorn that he wants to grow into an oak tree. It was doing ok but the main shoot got nibbled in the cold frame - probably mice as they also had a go at my strawberries. It is ok and sprouting other shoots just wondering if it will never grown properly as the growth tip has bene damaged. Any thoughts?

You are likely to find that one of the new shoots takes over as leader and in a few years you won't know it's happened. You should be able to tell by the end of this year. If not, you can help the tree along by choosing the new leader. Or of course you could treat yourself to a new acorn

We have three mini oak trees 12 - 18 inches tall, growing in pots from acorns collected in 2000. A couple of years ago one dried out too much and died but put up a new shoot from the base.
