  • Icelandic poppies won't germinate

    Hi everyone

I love poppies and really want to add some to my garden. I have some Icelandic poppies that say they can be sown outdoors until the end of July. I have been sowing them since May and none of them have germinated at all. They are from Suttons. I have tried germinating them in a propagator, indoors, and outdoors but have had no luck. Any tips/advice? Thank you

Could be duff seed - the only other thing I can think is to surface sow, then put the whole container in a large clear bag out of direct sunlight - small seed can lack the legs to get to the surface if covered.

If they are anything like Corn poppies they will only germinate if the soil has been disturbed.

I find the only way I get poppies to grow is to throw the seed randomly around the garden, usually in gravelled or wild areas and sometimes they will appear, usually the following year when I have completely forgotten about them.
        Good luck with yours!

Try putting a few seeds in the freezer for a few days before sewing.
They are after all from a part of the world where frozen ground is mandatory.
