Could it be a blue hubbard (squash)?

It's definitely not a pumpkin. No (true) pumpkin has that button at the flower end of the fruit. It's definitely something in the species Cucurbita maxima (winter squash).
Based on the shape, some sort of Hubbard squash, as suggested above, seems likely.

It's also worth noting that most pumpkins (and indeed most squash in general that ripen to orange or yellow) start of as yellow fruit, then turn orange when they ripen. If the fruit starts off green, on the other hand, it will likely ripen to a dark colour, that is, some shade of green, blue-green or grey.

A rogue seed probably got into the packet.

Personally, I'd say you should be happy. They might not be quite as decorative as an orange pumpkin, but they taste an awful lot better (pumpkins in the species C. pepo are not really fit for eating. They are, without exception, bland and watery, like a marrow).

Be sure to wait until the stalk goes fully brown before picking it. That's how you know it is ripe.

If there's only one, it'll probably grow to a decent size.
