Roses in Winter

Hi Guys

Just need some advice as this will be my 1st winter with my plants.

I have 2 roses in my back yard in containers. One is a Bush Rose and the
other a Patio.

I am wondering how hardy they are going to be when the 1st frosts are
gonna come along. I've dress up the base of the roses with top soil however
I am thinking maybe to cover them up utterly in fleece or something alike?

I'd love some advice as I am trying to keep as many as my plants alive as
possible.

Hello Alyth, roses are winter hardy and there shouldn't be a problem. Any branch ends and twigs that are nipped with frost can be pruned off in the spring.
The problem might be the pots. If they are small frost might penetrate the pots and nip the roots and that's a different matter.
I would move the pots to the warmest, driest part of the garden - up against a sunny wall or fence or under an overhanging eaves and if the pots are quite small wrap them in bubblewrap or sacking or something to keep the frost out. Or stand the pots inside a bigger pot and fill the space with compost.
You should be able to get your roses through the winter allright. Even if you did nothing they would probably be fine. Good luck.
