  • Not sure where to post this but.....

I moved my still flowering Geraniums in to the greenhouse about 3 weeks ago and positioned them in the insulated area. They are still many beautiful flowers but I thought they would have stopped by now. Should I leave them flowering and will they continue to flower right through in to next year?

I still have peppers growing well in the greenhouse as well as a small sunflower and a dahlia which is producing flowers in november!

The greenhouse heating is only used when the temperature drops below 1 degree

    Thanks

    Hi Dave,

Don't worry they'll stop soon if we get the weather forecast!! I once had some in a tub outside in flower on Christmas Day!!! You can snap the flowers off if you want especially if they are named varieties so they can build up a bit for next year but if they are ordinary bedding "geraniums" well you please your self - I don't think they are worth keeping really but some people keep them.

Your Dahlia - I would cut it down now if I was you as the tuber needs to dry out for a bit and go dormant ready for next year - stand the pot on it's side and it will help - that is if it's a names variety again or a particular colour you want to keep. If it's a pot of bedders (like Redskin) well again I'd get rid of it and so some more seeds in the spring.

Another thing to think of is that they will probably have Vine weevil grubs in and these will cause al sorts of troubles later on as they will eat the roots and the plants will collapse all of a sudden - so I'd know them out of the pots and shake off as much of the old soil as you can and re-pot in either a compost containing a vine weevil killer or you can (or could at one time) use one of the patio cleaners like armillartox (I never told you this

Funny,I still have geraniums outside, flowers are long gone but foliage looks brilliant-helthy bushy plants with bicoloured leaves. We had a few frosty nights so far and it didn't make any damage to them.

Where do you garden Dave? You can add your location to your profile and it will help us with any questions you have. It can be a county if you like, but if you're in UK it helps tremendously as conditions here vary so much. My peppers were a disaster this year. Sunflowers now finished, and the last of the dahlias succumbed to the frost night before last.
