  • Is this a sport?

A small pink (Dianthus) plant in my front garden, variety unknown, has one bloom on it which, as you can see, is larger and pinker than all the others. Is it likely to be a sport, or just normal variation? If it's a sport, how should I propagate it - cuttings in the autumn?

I have taken similar shoots in flower, put them in water and roots grew, not 100% though, I have had some fail.

How interesting! I'd definitely try to grow it as a separate plant, and give it a name too. My very own cultivar.

I think it's how a fair few cultivars are found, eg dwarf conifers are often pieces from larger shrubs or trees with a different growth habit.
Mostly flowers, some fruit and veg, at the seaside in Edinburgh.
