  • Lilies in pots

I have a number of pots with lilies in, they have now finished blooming, is it best to leave the foliage to die back on its own or is it ok to cut it back? ( just very untidy!)

Hi Dorothy, I too grow lilys in containers.
Yes, I know what you mean, they do look very straggly but I always leave them to die down.
I go on the idea that like daffodils, it's better to let them wither away in their own time.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I leave mine too but invariably the lily beetles will feast on them too so I still have to keep an eye on them

Move the pots out the way but still look after them . As Danny says, dead head if you haven't already and give them a bit of a boost with something like Tomato fertiliser to build the bulbs up for next years flowering.
