Would it be possible for people to say what area they live in. To me it would give me an idea of how my area compares to there for likes of sowing times.

This comes up quite regularly, Bob, and many of us do in our signatures that appear at the bottom of our posts. This is perhaps the easiest place, as the information is always visible to everybody and you don't have to repeat it every time you post.

If you want to add your location, or any other information, to your signature, go to your user settings (open the drop down menu [the downward pointing arrow] next to your avatar picture, top right).
Once you are in your user settings, click on the account tab.
Scroll down that tab until you come to the Conversation Detail Options. One of those options (in blue, as it's a link) is Edit Post Signature.
Click on Edit Post Signature and add whatever signature you'd like to appear at the bottom of the page. Click save and you're good to go.

Remember this is a public forum, so keep your location informative but not too informative.

I put the my postal town in my signature. It is close enough for seed sewing times. Soil type is also useful.
