I bought a couple of bearded iris today to grow in my sunny front garden. After a check it says they shouldn’t be planted outdoors until later summer. Should I just put them in a pot in the greenhouse for the next few months and plant our later?

Irises normally overwinter in the ground and the rising leaves are frost proof.
Just look up the frost hardiness for the variety you have got. If it is frost proof just plant it.
I have got two varieties and they have both got rising leaves that have seen frost without damage.

The reason they say that is because that's when the roots start to grow again. This time of year, the roots will not be growing.
But if it's a potted plant then, assuming it's a hardy variety, there shouldn't be any problems with planting it out now as long as you don't damage the roots (as that damage will not recover until late summer).Comment
