  • Annual poppies?

Any advice on growing these please?
Previously I’ve sprinkled seeds and nothing seems to have some up.

I’ve treated myself to a couple of different types and read that they should be frozen for a few days. Thing is…why haven’t the previously sprinkled ones grown?
Welsh poppies and wild Flanders poppies do really well for me- just not other annual varieties.
What am I doing wrong? Any tips please?

I've had a decent success with Mother of Pearl poppies in the past by sprinkling, watering in and then covering over with a light layer of compost then watering a little bit more. I came to the conclusion I was getting terrible germination because the seeds left on the seedbed were blowing away or being eaten before they germinated.
Not sure if that was actually what happened but after I covered them up a bit I actually had some poppies!

Same here. Got a free packet of them in a DT Brown order once and they come up every year. Lovely carmine colour. The soil is very free draining and in a sunny spot if that helps. Normal opium poppies do well too, again they self seed each year, mine are Lauren's Grape.
        Are y'oroight booy?

Ok- thanks for your help peeps. I’ve got Icelandic and Californian poppies so will freeze those just incase we don’t get another heavy frost , then sprinkle them on a sunny gravelly area.

I find it hard to find different varieties of annual poppies here- but will look online to see if I can find opium ones and mother of pearl.
          Much appreciated!

Ive tried sprinking around here and it doesn't work for me so I put some soil/used compost in a tray and cover with grit, then i sprinkle seeds on and leave in the gh to germinate.

Are you talking about harvested or bought seed?

I don't know what these yellow ones are, there are orange too. I sprinkled seed from neighbours' plants and nothing for a couple of years and then they came up everywhere.
Opium poppies self seed but not very enthusiastically compared to say nigella. I do sprinkle them around and get some interesting peony ones and colour variations.

That's Welsh poppy, Danny, devilish hard to get rid of once they have a foothold.

I’m talking about bought ones Danny.
I’m really fancying different opium ones . …I just need to source some.
I’ve also found a few other packets of others …Paeony poppy ( from our mag)and pivotine ecarlate which I’ll try, both double blooms.
