Well, my lovely gift is now flowering - the first 'head' opened yesterday. Slightly surprised as it is rather different to the pictures I googled of Apple Blossom Google Image Result for http://www.scenicnc.com/sitebuilder/images/Apple_Blossom_Amaryllis-343x430.jpg but rather looks more like the Ackermanii shown to the right of the Apple BlossomHappy Gardening,

from bulb to flower in 8 weeks, that's just right.
I've just brought mine in (the one that flowered last winter and I planted in the garden for the summer).
I'm just about to chop its leaves off and pop it in the fridge for 6 weeks to chill.
Then it'll be onto a warm windowsill to hopefully flower mid-Feb.

I have ad an amarylis for years. It flowered well the first few years but after that nothing for many years, then one year it flowered again then nothing again since.
I just treat it as a leafy houseplant nowadays. Watered with the rest of them. If it ever does flower again I will be stunned.
