  • quick sweet pea pots

I'm just sowing another load of sweet peas, because they've started chitting themselves in the (damp) shed.

The first sowings (Nov) are doing really well in the cold greenhouse. The loo roll pots are a little mouldy, but nothing to worry about.

I'm hoping for a bumper crop this year.
I usually neglect to water/feed/pick them, and they run to seed too quickly

Mine did that last year, first time growing them! Don't think I'll ever bother with them again tbh. You can get better plants without all the extra maintenance

Sure, you can get easier plants to grow. But nothing beats the smell of a bunch of sweet peas

Or the sheer volume of flowers you get to pick.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Or just the loveliness of a sheet of flowers and the insects that they bring into the garden.

Am planningn to grow some in amongst my French beans this year a) because they're really pretty and I love the flowers and b) because the larger flowers will attract bees and the like. At least that's the plan! Can never be bothered with autumn sowing (not good at looking after them all winter) but will be sowing this weekend in root trainers.

I just found them too much maintenance, nice flowers but just too much hassle! The bee's didnt really seem to bother with them, and just went for the Dahlia's and Jacobs Ladder, I couldn't even dead head them because there was so many bee's etc on them all the time, but they still flowered like mad unlike the sweet pea's that went to seed

You're lucky, I never have dahlias and sweet peas at the same time ! (Dahlias are autumn flowering, and my sweet peas are finished by July)

I usually find that so long as you do a minimum of a half hearted attempt to dead head the sweet peas then they'll still be flowering come autumn time but then again mine probably start flowering later as I spring sow and they're only getting going by July. Maybe the answer is to do a few of both to extend the season.

My flowered right into autumn too, just kept going if I kept picking and cutting. They were spring sowed too, so maybe that's why. But may get around to starting off a bit earlier this year, as in within the next few weeks?

I have loads of sweet pea seed, but neglected the seedlings last year as I didn't really have space for them as well as all the veg! However I have an extra set of shelves for the conservatory this year, so maybe I'll try again...
