  • Jeez what am I growing?? Can anyone enlighten me?

Ok so hubby - after an argument - skulks back home with an apology and some shopping. He bought me a shaker box of bee and butterfly flowers from Morrissons. Now I don't like scattering seeds everywhere as the first time i did this it looked awful. So I took some individual seeds out to germinate them.

There were 5 white egg shaped seeds about the size of your pinky nail - i sowed them and the next day they had germinated. Today they were about 2 inches long!!

They have really long stalks - AND roots!! They are still in an egg shape at the top but have burst the seed casing. The heads are split in the middle and bright green.

Can anyone advise what these might be? Triffids, maybe? I'm scared incase I'm growing a MONSTER! I only have a wee garden.

    Hi Victoria

I have no idea what they are.
I'm surprised there isn't some indication of variety on the packaging.

You are going to have to keep us posted with pics - this is too intriguing!!!

As soon as you have leaves, take another picture and post it.

Is there a list of what the mix contains on the packet somewhere?

I'd bet on a bean of some sort.

i'm going for vetch/bean of some kind

i got some bee and butterfly flowers last year, know what you mean about it looking rubbish lol, some plants like borage did really well, but the other stuff wasn't that great. so this year i've gone for individual stuff, but still have some wildflower mix to sow at the bottom of the garden, past the fence where it doesn't really matter what they look like but the bees will like them

Thanks for all your input - Im keeping this one updated. Will take pics as soon as the leaves appear.

There was no list of flowers on the box!!! This is the main reason I've picked out some individual seeds instead of scatter them everywhere. I like bees and butterflys but I like structure in my garden moreso!

Look like okra, possibly lupins but neither makes sense!! Id transfer them to kitchen roll tubes if they're taprooted.

After further thought I'd rule out okra 'cos their cotyledons tend to slant upwards on germination and are usually pale coloured. I'll bet on lupins which are darker and their thingies point downwards.
And I've got 30+ in tubes in the GH to compare.
