cosmos atrosanguineus

Hi
I have grown this lovely mexican plant before but I never have any
luck overwintering it. I dont want to keep buying replacements
every year as it can be a costly business.
What are other grapes experience of growing and overwintering the
chocolate cosmos? Has any one successfully propogated it from cuttings?

No propagation but ours is 4 years old now [it was one of the first plants we bought together - aah]...but it overwinters well up here in the midlands.

Year 1 we just shoved it in the corner of the garage. Year 2 it went in the bottom of the growhouse as we were planning a move and I thought we would forget about it in the garage. Year 3 it was in the ground and it took a while to get going but it caught up late last summer and it has survived this winter as well.

Thanks for the info. Cant be the cold then.
Maybe its because my soil is heavy clay.
I will be brave and give it another go but I will add a load agricultural
grit to the hole at aid drainage and choose a sunny spot.
I will try my biggest plant and hope for the best.

I have heavy soil and mine has been fine. I bought it last summer, and dug it up before the first frost. I put it in the conservatory, and eventually it died back. Now it has shoots about 7 inches high.
I did here they can survive in the UK, but I am glad I didn't risk it after all that snow! Besides, I think it would just rot in my garden over the winter, it never dries out as we are east facing.
