When will my Dahlias start to shoot?

I left loads outside last year, I've had a dig around and they don't feel rotted When will they start to show above ground? They better come back, as their was about 30+ of them

If they have not been got at by the frost they should start popping up about the same time as the spud's come .
You are lucky if the frost did not get your's mine was got at so i rotovated them up....jacob

Iggle, you could always dig a bit up and start it off indoors if you're impatient.

You can then take cuttings from that starter plant to increase your stock.

I bought some Dahlias in a bag last week for £1. I' ve looked at them and they are just sprouting. Can I divide them or take cuttings from them, (And where and when) without harming them or should I wait another year

I don't really like plants in the house anymore, after having loads of little flies in the house from some last year! My old plastic greenhouse rotted I'll just have to wait I guess, and grow more from seed incase some have rotted!

that would be fungus gnats, caused by over-watering.

Little sods got in a gap behind the sink, had them in the kitchen every morning! Had them in another place I lived in as well, when I had cactus and they decided to live in the rotted wooden window frame

You can divide the tubers but you to have an eye( this years flowering shoot) in every piece. It's no good breaking the indivdual tubers off as they are just storage organs. Mine have only just started to shoot for cuttings but there's still plenty of time unless your a serious show person.

Thanks for the info on fungus gnats, I have lots in my house and wondered where they came from.

I really enjoyed Dahlias in the ground last year, up until then I had only ever grown them in pots the year before that. I am relativley new to them but they definatly one of my favourites. I dug them up last year and hung them in the shed to dry out. Is is time to start them off in pots now?

Yep I pot/box mine up in a 50:50 mix of multipupose and JI3 just to give them a bit of a feed and then empty the compost on the garden and the bit of feed left will go in the garden.

It's John Innes compost number 3. If you have a mind to, you can collect the dahlia seeds, and sow them next spring. It's amazing what sometimes comes up due to the cross polination. And they are easy to grow too

Ok thanks, so if this not a stupid question where do I get the seeds from?

Last year I would just cut the flowers and bring them in the house until I lost the bush to a heavy down pour!
