I inherited this from my house's previous owner. It's about 2 feet high and the same across. It smells lovely, sort of anissedy? It must have had flowers last year, as there are lots of small dried flower heads. Anyone know what it is please?

I bought five of them a couple of years ago, and found they didn't like my garden AT ALL. They didn't flower, barely grew, and I suspect would have soon died completely if I hadn't pulled them up first. They prefer the gritty, low nutrient, well drained soils favoured by a lot of herbs, I think. And sunshine!

Grew them from seed about 8 years ago, they seem to have a 2 year cycle.
Year 1, grows scented foliage and stays neat.
Year 2, produces small yellow flowers on relatively long stems and goes horribly leggy and untidy.
Remedy - cut back hard at end of year 2 and start cycle again. Dried foliage clippings make good addition to potpourri.Family motto "semper in excretum"
