  • All rotted! :-(

I thought I would dig up some of my dahlias to see if they were still ok, they were a couple of months back, but most of them have rotted Think I've got 3 left out of 60+. Got no where to store that many, so have to leave them in the ground

On the plus side I sowed 120 last week, so far 18 have popped up after a week!

What kind of dahlias are you growing?

If you have to leave them in the ground, a thick layer of straw can help to protect them from frost and a bit of grit or sand in the planting hole can help with drainage so they aren't sitting in too much wet.

This thread inspired me to have a rummage at one of my dahlia tubers.

I have never grown them before, so I followed all the destructions and waited.

They've been in the ground about 3 weeks now and the tuber is exactly the same as when I put it in - not wet, not dry, just dormant.

This is one of those patience things isn't it?

I have my dahlias in seed trays some have started to shoot but not all of them. I have taken some cuttings today and put in a pot ( five in 12cm pot ) and made a bag with clingfilm and put them in the back bedroom ( its where I put my seeds lol )

It's still early for dahlias ... they are a late summer flower

You can still sow them through, I done most of mine in march last year

Yes I know, but it's early for them to be showing in the borders from over-wintered tubers.

Most of mine have rotten overwinter this year - I imagine it's because of colder temperatures than the previous few years.
Because they are for later in the summer there's plenty of time for more seeds/tubers to be started.
