  • propagate a magnolia??

Can anyone offer me some advice on how to take a cutting from a mature magnolia tree and how to keep it alive ?!?

my sister has an elderly neighbour who after living next to 6 generations of her husbands family and reaching the glorious age of 93 is finally moving down south to be with her daughter, she has a beautiful magonlia and id hate to see the new people move in and destroy it without taking some cuttings from it, can someone assist me with this??

This is from my plant book, and relates to Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' so not sure if it applies to all magnolias:
'Propagation is by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Use small cuttings and cut the leaves in half to reduce transpiration which causes wilting. Layering in early spring is guaranteed to work but can be slow, taking up to 18 months to root well.'

      Best of luck with it.
