Growing Dahlias from seed

A bit of help please; i'm growing some dwarf Dahlias from seed and at the moment they stand at around 6" in height. Would it benifit me to pinch out the growing tip at sometime to encourage the plant to bush out, or should I leave the plant to its own devices?

I've grown bedding Dahlias in the past, if they're the type you mean, I've never pinched out the growing tips and they never grew more than 6 to 8 inches high anyway. If you do a Google search for Dahlias from seed, there's loads of info on the web.

I always pinch mine out Workhorse.

I grew bedding or dwarf dahlias from seed last year and never pinched them out. They were dead headed as needed and kept going til the frost took them out. Big dahlias though, they do do better if pinched out to make them branch.

I did some drawf ones and they havent done very well. I have also planted some big ones and took some cuttings like my sister told me to and they are not faring well even though they are indoors.

I think I pinched most of mine out last year, don't think I did them all through as I had loads! But they all done fine.


I've got 40+ growing outside in my unheated plastic greenhouse at the moment, might bring them in tonight through as there is a chance of frost tonight in Devon
