Roses - leaf problem

I planted a new climbing rose at the end of last summer. It has grown well and has lots of green glossy leaves and some small buds. But,[I]the lower leaves have started to go a pale yellow colour and have darker rusty/spotty patches on them![/I]

Can anyone tell me what has caused this and what I should do to cure it and ensure good further growing and blooms? ( I never am lucky with roses )

Roses must be planted in new soil-if you plant a new rose in the same place as the old one that died you might loose the new one due to fungus or the other stuff still sitting in the soil.

Thanks Coreopsis, I have had a look at the site but the leaves on my rose are much lighter (yellow) with dark circles of 'blotchy patchy' raised bits - I will try to post a picture.. unless anyone knows what it might be?

The dark patches sound like rose black spot, if you don't mind spraying something like RoseClear will work (although the leaves already infected will not be cured, just works on new growth).
Is the rose in a pot or in the ground? The yellowing leaves could be a sign of a mineral lacking, There's plenty of rose food on the market, plus a generous mulch of rotted manure helps.

Roses don't like being in containers.I have a few of them,just one known by name-Zepherine-which is said to be not a champion in disease resistance.It had a black spot when it came to me in container.Once I put it into the ground and fed it I was rewarded with very healthy growth and beautiful scentad flowers.Roses need to be fed-give it anything-Miracle Grow,bone meal or some muck(horse one is supposed to be better for them).

Mine is in the ground. Against an old wall that we removed a very old clematis from. I have removed all of the affected leaves today and will look for a suitable spray for it.

Give it some mulch and feed too, soil at the base of walls can be quite dry and poor.
