sensitive mimosa?

I have a sensitive mimosa that me and OH have been growing and it is about a year old but seems there is only growth at the top and bottom and it is still looking a bit bare does it take a long time to get bushy as I saw someone elses at a few months old it made mine look like a twig! Am I doing something wrong?
