Aster Problems

Hi Guys,

I have bought a couple of poor looking asters from a local boot sale, they had a few brown leaves leaves and were pretty pot bound. After getting them home I cut back the dead flowers and divided them and put them into separate pots to see if I could improve their health before planting them in the garden.

It's not been around 3 wks and more foliage is starting to die back and their health does not seem to be improving.

Any ideas???

Thanks for the informative advice. I'll take them back to the boot sale and demand a full refund.

Put them in the shade and don't overwater them.
Theres still time yet.
Keep the slugs away as Astere are one of their favourite foods.

Give a good dose of plant food.

I have fed them with Plant food and they are in the shade. I thought brown leaves were a sign on drying out so I have been watering them alot. Maybe that's the issue.

As they are perrenials will they grow back next year or is all hope lost?

Brown leaves can be a sign of under- or over-watering.

They shouldn't be brown and dried out at this time of year. They should be full of vigour and with bright green fresh leaves, ready to flower at the end of summer.


Those brown leaves aren't going to come back to life ... pull them off and compost them. You can then see if you have any fresh green growth underneath.

I have cut off all the brown leaves and yes there are still some green left. I think I will stop watering completely and leave them to their own devices....Kill or Cure is what I say. Thanks for all the help.
